Sukeban (slang for "girl boss") style is similar to the goth and punk subcultures in the West. It was created by female deliquent gangs in the 1970s. The look is based on a modified 70s era uniform.

The top was often shortened to reveal the midriff, while the skirt was dramatically long. Sneakers were worn instead of loafers. The uniforms were often decorated with gang symbols and other markers of street status. Sometimes long duster style coats were worn and these were also decorated.
